Cassini Images Bizarre Hexagon on=20 Saturn

Pasadena, Calif. -- An odd, six-sided,=20 honeycomb-shaped feature circling the entire = north pole=20 of Saturn has captured the interest of = scientists with=20 NASA's Cassini mission.

NASA's Voyager 1 = and 2=20 spacecraft imaged the feature over two decades = ago. The=20 fact that it has appeared in Cassini images = indicates=20 that it is a long-lived feature. A second = hexagon,=20 significantly darker than the brighter = historical=20 feature, is also visible in the Cassini = pictures. The=20 spacecraft's visual and infrared mapping = spectrometer is=20 the first instrument to capture the entire = hexagon=20 feature in one image.

"This is a very = strange=20 feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion = with six=20 nearly equally straight sides," said Kevin = Baines,=20 atmospheric expert and member of Cassini's = visual and=20 infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA's Jet = Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We've = never=20 seen anything like this on any other planet. = Indeed,=20 Saturn's thick atmosphere where = circularly-shaped waves=20 and convective cells dominate is perhaps the = last place=20 you'd expect to see such a six-sided geometric = figure,=20 yet there it is."

The hexagon is similar = to=20 Earth's polar vortex, which has winds blowing in = a=20 circular pattern around the polar region.  = On=20 Saturn, the vortex has a hexagonal rather than = circular=20 shape. The hexagon is nearly 25,000 kilometers = (15,000=20 miles) across. Nearly four Earths could fit = inside it.=20

The new images taken in thermal-infrared = light=20 show the hexagon extends much deeper down into = the=20 atmosphere than previously expected, some 100 = kilometers=20 (60 miles) below the cloud tops. A system of = clouds lies=20 within the hexagon. The clouds appear to be = whipping=20 around the hexagon like cars on a racetrack.=20

"It's amazing to see such striking = differences=20 on opposite ends of Saturn's poles," said Bob = Brown,=20 team leader of the Cassini visual and infrared = mapping=20 spectrometer, University of Arizona, Tucson. "At = the=20 south pole we have what appears to be a = hurricane with a=20 giant eye, and at the north pole of Saturn we = have this=20 geometric feature, which is completely = different."=20

The Saturn north pole hexagon has not = been=20 visible to Cassini's visual cameras, because = it's winter=20 in that area, so the hexagon is under the cover = of the=20 long polar night, which lasts about 15 years. = The=20 infrared mapping spectrometer can image Saturn = in both=20 daytime and nighttime conditions and see deep = inside. It=20 imaged the feature with thermal wavelengths near = 5=20 microns (seven times the wavelength visible to = the human=20 eye) during a 12-day period beginning on Oct. = 30, 2006.=20 As winter wanes over the next two years, the = feature may=20 become visible to the visual cameras. =

Based on=20 the new images and more information on the depth = of the=20 feature, scientists think it is not linked to = Saturn's=20 radio emissions or to auroral activity, as once=20 contemplated, even though Saturn's northern = aurora lies=20 nearly overhead.

The hexagon appears to = have=20 remained fixed with Saturn's rotation rate and = axis=20 since first glimpsed by Voyager 26 years ago. = The actual=20 rotation rate of Saturn is still uncertain.=20

"Once we understand its dynamical = nature, this=20 long-lived, deep-seated polar hexagon may give = us a clue=20 to the true rotation rate of the deep atmosphere = and=20 perhaps the interior," added Baines.
